Poker in Paradise

Edited by John Stokes

The PokerStars Caribbean Adventure is a poker festival which was held on Paradise Island in the Bahamas between the 5th and the 14th of January. The festival has provided some excellent stories over the years, with players winning millions of dollars every year. This year was no different with many excellent stories to coming to the forefront.

An impressive six players won more than a million dollars, with Dimitar Danchev taking home a massive $1,859,000 for his win in the $10,000 main event. Scott Seiver also won $2,003,480 in the $100,000 Super High Roller event. Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst also won the $25,000 High Roller tournament for $1,424,420, which made her the most successful female tournament player of all time.

Many celebrities grace this prestigious tournament every year. It was no different this year, as Olympic legend Michael Phelps and Seinfeld star Jason Alexander entered the event, as well as enjoyed the luxurious setting of the Atlantis hotel and resort.

These huge live events are often reserved for the super-rich because of the huge buy-ins, but there was one player who brought this extravagant festival to those less fortunate. Greg Jensen, the CEO of one of the biggest hedge funds, Bridgewater Associates, decided to donate his winnings from the Super High Roller event to the victims of the Newtown school shootings. Jensen who is a self-proclaimed amateur of the game was up against the best players in the world, including Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu, but he managed to finish in sixth place to win $286,200. It was hugely generous and will certainly be appreciated by the Newtown residents.

Jensen's wife was also a winner as she came third in the Women's Event to win a respectable $8,320. The exciting poker action was accompanied by sunshine, water sports, five star restaurants and bars, as well as Olympic Swimming superstar, Michael Phelps who showed off his poker skills in the main event. These kinds of huge events often come and go quite quickly, however this year's PCA will not be forgotten anytime soon.
